(Not a Employment Law Question?)

I was wondering if there is a law regarding nursing

Sent to Employment Law Experts May 14 03:58 PM

I was wondering if there is a law regarding nursing assistants in ohio to how many patients they can legally be respondsible for. I work at kettering medical center and on our unit and some others we carry any where from 11 to 20 patients. When I was 7.5 months pregnant they assigned me 23 patients and when I tolded them I wasnt able to take that many I was told by the charge nurse " If I didnt like it I could go home". When I reported it to higher up that nurse came back and said all kinds of lies about my care giving. She made me out to be the bad person. I did have witness'' to that one of many episodes. Because of what they were expecting out of me during my pregnancy I ended up taking 3 weeks off. This was due to stress and the uncaring co-workers. This was the beginning of my preterm labor. I was told I would get to talk to these nurses and manager from the director but no ever got back with me. when I came back to work they had hired more aides but no more has been said.

For nursing homes in Ohio, the ratio is 15:1

(C) Each nursing home shall have staff sufficient in number on each shift to provide
care and services to meet the needs of the residents in an appropriate and
timely manner and to provide a minimum daily average of two and three-fourths
hours of direct care and services per resident per day as follows:
(1) A minimum daily average of two hours per resident per day to be provided
by nurse aides with the ratio of nurse aides to residents not exceeding one
nurse aide for every fifteen residents or major part thereof at any time.

Licensed nurses may be counted toward meeting this requirement if the
nurses are performing the same types of services as nurse aides and are not
counted toward meeting the other nursing requirements of this paragraph;
(2) A minimum daily average of two-tenths of an hour per resident per day to
be provided by registered nurses. A home may request a variance to use a
licensed practical nurse to meet part or all of this requirement in accordance
with paragraph (D) of this rule; and
(3) The remainder of the hours may be provided by nurses, nurse aides,
activities aides, occupational therapists, physical therapists, dietitians, and
social service workers who provide direct care and services to the residents.
Each nursing home shall have a registered nurse on call whenever one is not on
duty in the home.

There does not appear to be a specific legal ratio in Ohio for hospitals.
